Someone recently placed a help notice within the Event Management UK group on LinkedIn. They were seeking a `gay friendly’ venue in London. I don’t know why they had to specify `gay friendly’ unless of course their experience is that many venues are not. If this is the case, they can be reassured by the Equality Act 2010. Read more »

Manual handling accidents account for more than 1/3 of all reported at-work accidents, of which 2/3 involve an over-three day injury. The most common injury is to the back and/or spine. The regulations, brought into effect in January 1993 and amended in 2002 are set to give guidance to employers and employees on how best to reduce musculoskeletal incidents at work. From April 2010, the fine for serious breaches of the Data Protection Act (DPA) increased to £500,000 and consideration is being given to custodial sentences in the future. An event management role means handling personal data (and sometimes sensitive personal data) and those that do so should be very aware of their responsibilities. Read more »

Legislation News

The Equality Act 2010 was launched in October. It pulls together historical pieces of legislation and puts them all under one umbrella. It is about equality and discrimination and how to assess, plan, manage and control these issues.

If you handle hundreds of events every year and employ numerous agencies, either under contract or ad-hoc, it may be time to undertake a risk review with your suppliers.
